Somerset Co. Superior Court Judge Rosemarie Williams has problems. Back in 1993, the judge was humiliated in the first ever open ethics hearing for a state judge. Williams's public fights with her boyfriend (she was a divorced mom, he was twenty years her junior) were so outrageous that the state suspended her for three months.
On Tuesday, the state's ethics counsel again recommended suspension for the judge. Williams was arrested on a DWI in December 2005. If her two-month suspension is accepted, her sentence will be the harshest ever for a first-time offender on the bench.
First time ever for an open ethics hearing. Longest sentence ever for a first-time DWI. That's a lot of bad ground broken for one justice.
Back in January (the same month she pleaded guilty to the DWI charge), Judge Williams reunited a dog with its original owner. The dog, Chopper, had been adopted from a shelter after his owner was displaced by Hurricane Katrina. The judge's decision then especially relevant now:
"It is a bittersweet decision the court makes today …. Perhaps this court’s decision will play a part in helping to rebuild her life."
Hopefully, the same will hold true for Judge Williams.
